Precision Engineering: Small Charges for Minimal Local Impact
Rock removal on space-constrained New England construction sites naturally generates community curiosity and concern. However, modern urban rock excavation relies on highly localized, engineered bench charges designed to fracture rock quietly rather than create massive explosions.
In fact, today’s initial shot was so heavily controlled that the video footage captured by our perimeter camera is remarkably routine—the charges produced only a muffled sound and brief settling dust beneath protective heavy-duty blasting mats.

Real-Time Agility: Drone Aerial Monitoring & Traffic Management
Maintaining rigorous site safety while minimizing inconvenience for our Melrose neighbors is our top priority. For today's shot, our team deployed a high-resolution monitoring drone to maintain a live 360-degree aerial view of the site, adjacent properties, and nearby roadways before, during, and immediately after the blast.
Because the Greenwood site is wide open and highly visible from above, this real-time aerial feed allowed our licensed blasting contractor and the on-site Melrose Fire Department detail officer to coordinate with maximum efficiency:
Instant Perimeter Clearance: The drone confirmed that all surrounding buffer zones and roadways were completely clear of pedestrians and vehicles seconds before the firing sequence.
Streamlined Horn Timing: Because safety was verified visually from above, the Fire detail officer and blaster agreed to shorten the road hold and warning horn duration to the absolute minimum necessary.
Immediate Road Reopening: As soon as the "All Clear" long horn sounded and the drone verified post-shot stability, traffic on Greenwood Street was reopened immediately, resulting in virtually no traffic delays.
Stay Informed Throughout the Excavation Phase
As rock excavation continues over the coming weeks, we will maintain this disciplined, safety-first approach to keep site work efficient and community disruption at a minimum.
