Construction Update - Steel Fabrication Factory Tour
The 1mm Margin: How VR and Automation are Helping to De-Risk Cedar Park One64
Watching steel beams and columns swing into place may look like a giant-sized erector set, but the details and precision required to make sure all the pieces fit together are far from child’s play.
We recently visited Building Envelope Systems’ fabrication facility to see firsthand how technology is ensuring the pieces fit together perfectly on-site.
Using a VR 3D Overlay to compare the physical beam with the virtual "Digital Twin."
In this clip, we aren’t just “looking” at a beam. We’re using a 3D overlay to compare the physical work with the virtual rendering of its specification. The inspector can walk the length of the beam, checking bolt-hole alignment and flange squareness from every angle. If a discrepancy is found, it’s addressed in the factory—not on the job site where it causes delays and cost overruns.

Before the VR inspection even begins, the heavy lifting is done by computer-accurate robotics.
The precision cutting robot translates specs directly to the steel. Pieces are delivered to the welding station with holes pre-cut and dimensions verified, minimizing the human error that historically plagued large-scale fabrication.
One of the most satisfying moments was matching the ID numbers on the finished steel to the master drawings. Seeing "ID #3B69" in the factory and knowing exactly where it fits in the Cedar Park One64 structure brings a level of schedule certainty that is rare in this industry.
“🏗️ A Note on our Photography Skills - We went to the factory expecting to capture cinematic videos of sparks flying and beams being moved around. Instead, we got so fascinated by the details of computer automation and VR inspections that we simply forgot to press ‘record’ on the ‘flashy’ stuff. But at the end of the day, we’d rather tell a story about reliability and quality than show a cool video.”
Seeing the steel for Cedar Park One64 being fabricated showed us how technology makes the schedule more reliable and safety more certain. In a time of rising costs and increasing uncertainty, this gave us confidence that Building Envelope Systems and Essex Builders Corp are the right partners for the project.
